SEDITION / PROTESTS
This blog is written purely from COMMON SENSE. I read some writings on sedition in general
and from the angle of India and if you want to explore these writings they are
found on the web. There are better authorities on this subject than me.
When I read that a minstrel (from South India)
wrote a song about his thoughts and dissatisfaction with the government of his
state including the CM and at 2 a.m. was taken from his home and charged with
sedition. SEDITION???? In a Democratic Country????
My words was “You got to be kidding.” I went on to state to my friend
SEDITION! I who live in the oldest
Democratic Country, USA with all the protest, verbal discontent, marches, and
the like, 80% of the country would be imprisoned serving big time
sentences. I could NOT wrap my mind
around how a Democratic Country the largest in the world touted around the
world from the Prime Minister to other governments referral of India is working
a two oxymoron fronts SEDITION and DEMOCRACY.
It made no sense to me until I read India the Democracy has Sedition
Laws on the books.
This is a no win policy of freedoms and justice
in India. It is liken to the words of a
song I remember from back in the day which states “I AM GOING TO GET YA ONE WAY
OR ANOTHER.” The citizens of India at
the whim of a person in authority can be stifled, imprisoned etc. for
exercising their rights as citizens under Democracy. COME ON and the word is not just mentioned in
this one incident there are in recent years cases of SEDITION or threats of
charging one with sedition if a mark isn’t toed or words suppressed. Many if not all are opposing the views and
actions of the government and its policy is a Democratic right (without a
threat of an over through of the government, inciting riots and the like.) The exercising of these freedoms are afforded
them under the Democratic Laws of the country but are in conflict with the lack
of freedoms afforded them under SEDITION.
I call this imprisonment of mind and spirit where no amount of healthy
bodies or exercise will lead to a place of HOPE and PEACE.
MY COMMENTARY
:
In recent years especially around the elections
the word SEDITION was thrown around every time the now ruling party and their
cohorts did not like what was being said during the campaign. Religious rights have been threaten by some
party big wigs with SEDITION. However, most
comments made about politicians, policy and government, at best a case can be
made for defamation of Acharacter. A
reality slams one in the face with what that includes. A name slandered, reputation destroyed,
leading to loss of upright status of honesty etc. The key phrase is good character not one
tainted by one’s ruination of one’s own reputation. One’s impeccable stature and good name has to
be damage by unfounded untrue remarks.
Then and only then the case is plausible. Well perhaps for some it is better to charge
sedition, then to pursue a defamation of character case.
